SA Government agencies share spatial data through the Location SA initiative. This collaboration is an enabler for shared GIS infrastructure and a variety of web data services. See how Location SA has implemented Cloud and Enterprise Portal for ArcGIS infrastructure to build a common platform for the development of public service solutions. Discover collaborative implementation strategies for new data services and technologies required for decreasing resources versus the increasing challenges of the Internet of Things.
Location SA shares through geospatial collaborations, web services and now portal platforms and cloud infrastructure. The reasons for Location SA include:
Adopt best practices through leveraging innovation within key geospatial departments
Reduce costs through sharing resources and expertise across SA government
Collaborate to share knowledge, to improve services to the community and to kick some goals!
Facilitate business solutions and intelligence.
Governance Framework create groups at all levels of geospatial consideration within each member agency and provides for shared leadership. Each member signs a Data Sharing Agreement made under the Public Sector (Data Sharing) Act 2016 and a memorandum of Administrative Arrangement (MOAA) which both enforce that members contribute to the Governance Framework and follow guidelines in the Change Management Framework. This way everyone knows what and how they can be involved in Location SA to ensure best practice in data sharing and geospatial services and infrastructure.
ArcGIS Desktop – GIS specialists
Web maps – intersection services, data services, basemaps
Public Map Viewer and open data (Data.SA) – supply of datasets (and soon, web services)
Agency Portal for ArcGIS solutions developed in Enterprise Portal platforms built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure
Ageing physical infrastructure with legacy solutions, high cost, reduced speed, outages and long change implementation times
Increased demand with decreasing budgets for online business solutions development
High cost of running multiple license agreements
High cost of external business solutions development
Solutions software vendor lock-in
No highly available solutions with 24/7 support.
